Overview of OSHA lockout tagout guidelines and training.

OSHA states, “…[lockout/tagout] covers the servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment in which the unexpected energization or start up of the machines or equipment, or release of stored energy could cause injury to employees.”

Lockout

A lock, as defined by OSHA, is a device that utilizes such means as a mechanical security device, (i.e. key, combination type, etc) to hold an energy isolating device in the safe position and prevent the energizing of a machine or equipment. Included are blank flanges and bolted slip blinds.

Lockout is the primary system to control hazardous energy and protect employees from unexpected energy or startup of machinery. While servicing or maintaining any mechanical equipment that uses a mechanical power source (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, sir, and/or steam), the equipment must be locked out.
