The National Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has labeled the maltreatment of children as a “substantial public health problem” . In California, as recently as 2008 there were more than 700,000 referrals for investigation of child abuse and neglect involving nearly 500,000 children. These statistics are staggering. But, what can be done? More importantly, what must be done. The first step in prevention is reporting the problem. There are many Mandated Reporters as defined by law:
- Health practitioners
- Teachers, teacher’s aides
- Childcare custodians
- Employees of child protective agencies
- Commercial film and photo print processors
- Clergy
- Firefighters, animal control and humane society officers […]
